As a cook on board a US navy ship, there is an incident where he out swims a navy diver. He also gets to see the divers at work. (Master Chief ‘Billy’ Sunday) injures his lungs when trying to save one of his divers. Carl signs up to become the first black navy diver. At dive school Master Chief Billy Sunday makes his life a living hell as he is bitter from not being able to dive anymore due to his injury. Brashear has to struggle against everyone and is determined to prove himself and never give up.
